I dream in colour,
But now everything is dark,
Where has the light gone?
Oh, cruel leafy canopy?
No green meadow, just blue thoughts.
A spectre haunts me,
Through the trees he drifts slowly,
I hear no weeping,
Just a tall, grey wall of sighs,
Twigs snap, and nothing changes.

Oh dear, that was sad and depressing! …. Why am I always drawn to writing such misery? Don’t answer that!
Hope you like my Tanka’s (even if they’re sad,) and the contrasting photos I took of the trees.

My first YA fantasy novel The Curse of Time - Book 1 - Bloodstone is set in Cambridge and Book 2 - Golden Healer is now out too. As well as this, I have contributed to several anthologies, created my own with some amazing international writers, bloggers and creatives during the pandemic: This Is Lockdown and written two poetry collections: Lockdown Innit Poems About Absurdity & Mr. Sagittarius Poetry and Prose. I write book reviews on my blog and on Goodreads, book bub and on my bookstagram. I have a penchant for travel and have relatives in far flung places, Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore, (my birthplace.) I grew up in in Bonnie Scotland, in Edinburgh, and now live in Cambridge. I love sunny, hot places, particularly Rome, Venice, Portugal, Barcelona, and I forgot to mention the sun drenched beaches of the Caribbean, how could I? I am lucky to have been blessed with two lovely daughters and a husband who I fondly refer to in this blog as my black sheep. Family joke! With my passion for travel, culture, beautiful beaches, good food, books, theatre, writing, and humour, I hope to keep you entertained. I'm loving every minute of this creative journey, please join me.

Oh, the dark comes out of you today, Marie. Maybe that’s how you let it out so the light can replace it. Just like how sometimes I can write the best breakup poetry and I’ve been happily married for almost 33 years now! The images of the trees are breathtaking. Great Tanka. Hugs, Sister. ❤

Yes, it’s strange really. Yesterday, I wrote a humour piece for Carrot Ranch’s flash fiction competition and today I’m at the opposite spectrum! I must be bipolar! Oh dear. Hugs to you Colleen. I love taking photos of trees. These were near my work, both gorgeous trees had to snap ’em!

Hi Marje. I think there’s something intriguing about turning off the happy colors in poetry and writing about the dark side of life. I get enticed at times also. The first B/W photo is very spooky-looking. Loved your tankas. ❤

Thank you so much Olga. Yes poetry often seems to lend itself to the dark side of life. So glad you enjoyed the photography too. 🙂

This is a lovely poem – and literally haunting. The contrasting photos of the tree are also very powerful. I think mature trees have a strong spiritual presence. No wonder Tolkien brought them to life in The Lord of the Rings, and I’m sure other authors have done so too. I reviewed “The Curse of Time” recently and should have mentioned the poems which you included in your book – they made a strong impression on me, and increased the richness of the story.

Thank you Sheila. I love photographing trees and they inspired me to write these poems. Thank you so much for reviewing The Curse of Time. I read your review with great interest. Your comments are very perceptive and thoughtful. Thank you too for mentioning the poetry in the book in your comnent here. It’s good to know you found the poetry added something extra to the narrative particularly as the puzzle piece Tankas were added much later on in the writing process. I am so glad I decided to do this. 🙂

That was great Marje. Maybe it’s that Halloween time of month that brings out the dark. 🙂 xx

“No green meadow, just blue thoughts”…
I love it… and how interesting that you wrote “blue thoughts”—> it literally made me think of the expression “Feeling blue”. Plus, contray to red, which symbolizes passion, blue represents thinking. So excellent choice… Beautiful poetry, I don´t think it was deppresing at all… ((Poetry most times is, anyway)… Much love! 😀
