Book Review: The Enhanced League by C. S. Boyack #Book #Review #Recommended #Reading

Goodreads Synopsis

The Enhanced league is a collection of short stories and anthems centered around a year in a fictional baseball league. It has a slight science fiction background. This league has a lot more pomp than you might be used to, and nobody seems to care if the players use performance enhancing drugs.

Stories involve existing heroes, up and comers, and falling stars. While there are the obvious stories that take place on the field of play, there are also human interest stories that take place around the baseball gyrations. These stories involve scouting, trades, ruthless business decisions, and even relationships.

I enjoyed researching and bringing you The Enhanced League, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

My review

An enjoyable read, and a different one for me. I can’t say that I am a baseball fan but reading The Enhanced League by C.S. Boyack does make you feel as if you are immersed in the world of Baseball. C. S. Boyack achieves this by writing engaging characters, adding a touch of humour and superb descriptions of the intricacies of the game itself, and the characters who live, breathe baseball, plus the use of devices, or drugs to create ‘enhanced’ players.

An interesting concept for a story.

My rating: 4 stars

I recommend this particularly for baseball and sport fans and to those who enjoy well crafted human interest storytelling.

I look forward to reading more from C.S. Boyack. This is the first book I have read from him and I am pleased to say it was an engaging read. I believe to date he has written 17 books.

  1. Craig Boyack is one of the most imaginative writers out there! So nice to see this collection getting some love today, Marje! Have alerted the Media! 😀 <3

  2. I don’t like baseball as much as football or hockey, but I do enjoy a game or two in the summer (even though my poor Pirates are usually in last place). That said, this book—to me—was so much more than a story about baseball. I loved the spectacle of the sport he created, but what really captured me was the characters. I thought they were rich and well developed, and I enjoyed seeing how all the arcs progressed. I also enjoyed the vignettes between chapters very much.

So nice seeing this book spotlighted here. It deserves an audience.

    1. I agree, it is so nice to highlight Craig’s work. I’ve been meaning to read his novels for some time now. Every now and then I step outside my usual read: fantasy, to try something new. It’s great to read a wide range of genres and styles. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment Staci. Awesome. 🙂

  3. So glad you took a chance on Enhanced League. I had fun playing with some new toys, like the second person POV anthems. It’s a nice stepping stone to my larger works and priced to accomplish that.

It’s looking like a banner day for me. Not only is there a great post up about Serang, there is also this one about The Enhanced League. Give Marje a visit and check out her site while you’re there. She’s had characters on Lisa Burton Radio, and is a nice person all around. If you’re lamenting the baseball season, like I am, Enhanced League might be the balm you need right now.

  5. I’m not a huge baseball fan, either, but am intrigued by the concept of this one of Craig’s. I have it waiting on my kindle with a bunch of his other books. *sigh* I’ll get to them. 🙂 Hope you’re well.

    1. Thanks for taking a chance on some of my titles. I’m missing baseball, which should be going in force right now. You’ll get to it one day and I’d love to know what you think.

  6. It’s been a while since I’ve read this one. It was so inventive and clever. I’m not a huge baseball fan (a game here or there), but I was riveted by The Enhanced League. I especially loved the back-and-forth with the announcers. So much fun!

  7. Thank you, Marje. I haven’t read Craig’s collection yet, but you’ve sparked my interest. YAY! All the best.

  8. I’ve only read two of Craig’s books, Marje, (he writes them faster than I can keep up – lol). I do like his humor, zany characters, and fast pace. I’m not much of a baseball fan either, so will probably stick to some of his other ones before getting to this one. Thanks for the review. 🙂

      1. I used to publish 2 books a year, Marje, and now it’s 1 book every 2 years. Sigh. This pandemic doesn’t help. Happy Writing, my friend. 🙂

  9. I’m not a huge fan of baseball either, so it’s good to know that you don’t have to be in order to enjoy this book. Great review, Marje. Congrats to Craig! He’s so creative. 😀 xo
