Cecil and Miranda’s Young Reviewers

Free library books via Elouise. Grab while you can!

eloisedesousa's avatarE. De Sousa

Working as a junior school librarian has given me the opportunity to see first-hand, how my books affect their readers. Young readers don’t get an opportunity to write book reviews for titles they’ve enjoyed unless it is in-house, that is, in their classroom or school library. I like to encourage my students to share their views with each other by offering up a suggestion box in our library which is filled with book titles chosen by my young readers. I’m happy to add Spoilt Miranda and Cecil the Bully have made the cut!

When discussing books, I get a lot of feedback from my younger readers that Spoilt Miranda is strange and takes the younger reviewer on a confusing journey of dreams before she resolves her situation. My older customers get it though and enjoy the ride. Sometimes scary, sometimes thrilling, the idea of Spoilt Miranda is controversial and encourages…

Punkie Night – by Kyt Wright

They’d wander round with spectral light, dressed with intent to cause a fright and once did call it Punkie night,

You modern tricksters ready to receive sweet treats upon All Hallows Eve are mere erzatz witches, no spells to weave.

You go from house to house and door to door with no respect for pagan lore.

Days gone lantern-light there to protect with costumes hiding poor souls from fear that darkness might resurrect some goblin…

Before, During, and After Publishing: A Marketing Checklist

Great marketing checklist from Staci Troilo

Staci Troilo's avatarStory Empire

Shout from your soapbox.Ciao, amici!
If you’re like most writers, the actual writing process is fun(ish) for you. The launch, on the other hand, is probably a soul-sucking, frenetic nightmare. There’s nothing worse than feeling like the people in the graphic, standing on your soapbox announcing to everyone in earshot that you have a new book for sale.

Yeah, that’s a horrible feeling, especially when no one cares.

I’ve been releasing a lot of titles lately, one under the Staci Troilo brand and a few as Keira Beck. So when I tell you I’ve been in launch-mode for months, that’s no lie. While it’s foremost on my mind, I figured I’d share my checklist for before, during, and after the nerve-wracking publication process. Much of what I’m going to share won’t cost you anything but time. But remember, time and money (when you’re talking promo) tend to have an inverse relationship. The more…

If you knew the date of your death, how would you live your life? *

A very engaging book review of The Immortalists from Jenny at Neverland.

Jenny in Neverland's avatarJenny in Neverland

This tag line is what instantly drew me to this book and I knew I had to get my hands on a copy. I’d seen the title floating around a bit and heard some good things but not too much to make my expectations soar. Which I think is the best way to go into a book – with little to no expectations. But what I did know is that I was intensely interested in the story and what lay beneath the cover because even from the cover alone, I had a feeling this book would be special.

Chelsea Buns with a Dutch twist [GBBO Bake Along]

A fabulous recipe for Chelsea buns via Anne at books baking and blogging.

bookbakeblog's avatarBooks Baking and Blogging

bread weekYou guys, I’m so proud of myself! I’ve only gone and baked myself some bread! Now, you might think “well, duh, you’re a baker, right?”, but any baker will be able to tell you that baking bread is something completely different from baking pies and tarts and cakes. And I’d only ever baked something resembling bread once before a couple of years ago. I think it was a pizza type dough.

Anyway, back to this bread! It was Bread Week on The Great British Bake Off – the week everybody always dreads, including me this year. I was going to have to bake along and I knew nothing about bread! Luckily, the Signature Challenge of the episode was to make Chelsea Buns (for the Americans: think cinnamon rolls). Baking something like Chelsea Buns or cinnamon rolls had been on my baking bucket list for a while now, so it…
