This haiku is inspired by the river walk near where I live. Yesterday, my daughter and I saw two swans, one was tranquil and the other angrily hissing at two guys on their barge. The two swans couldn’t have been any different!
Believe this Swan’s cute
Elegant fellow’s so calm
Near me’s no problem
Swan wife’s intention
Her whim is to hiss angry
At barge men in boats!
Synonyms of Idea and fancy : belief, intention, elegant, whim.

You got a really good photo of that swan. They are pretty birds, but they can be scary when their mad and hissing!
Thank you Priscilla. Yes they really can! Oh dear those two guys on the barge didn’t have a clue why the swan was so angry.
Two great and connected verses, Marje.
Thank you Robbie. That was fun. 🙂
Fantastic Sis 💜
I’m feeling a bit better. Cheered me up writing this. <3 x
Excellent 💜
Swans are so graceful you tend to forget they have attitude!, lol
Congratulations on your new review, Marje! I’ve always heard that swans can be fiesty. Maybe the female had eggs nearby she was protecting from the men. I enjoyed your haikus. 😀 xo
Thank you Vashti. 🙂
Thrilled with the review. Yes I reckon it was a female as she was getting mighty upset. x
I haven’t seen a swan yet and love to see one. I can’t imagine an angry swan. Your tanka tells a great story of the two swans, Marje. Congratulations on your new review.
Hi Miriam. I have been lucky to see white swans and black ones in Australia. They are beautiful but can be aggressive if threatened or fearful for their young. Thanks re: the review really made my day. 🙂
Wow, Marje. That makes me think of the ballet Swan Lake. Where in Australia did you see the white and black swans? 🤗
Hi Miriam. The white swans are in UK. The black ones I saw many years ago when I was visiting relatives in Perth, W. Australia.
Thank you, Marje. Eventually we’ll have a family vacation in Australia so I’m just thinking ahead.
Man, geese at public lakes (pre-coronavirus) are the worst. Very true poem.
Thank you. My mum’s parents had a goose to frighten off intruders when she was a youngster in Malaysia. Only thing was she was terrified of it herself!
Geese are mean, so I don’t blame her!
Well done, Marje. I wonder if the swans were protecting a nest, nearby. There’s wonderful mythology about the swan. <3
Yes perhaps the swan was. It does make we wonder as it was so furious with the people in the boat. I couldn’t see they they were doing anything to provoke it.
Good chance it was nesting. Sounds plausible. <3
That is a very pretty swan 🙂 Probably scarier because they can go from being pretty to hissy pretty quickly 🙂 Lovely haiku Marje, elegant like a swan itself 🙂
Yes, that’s true. There were two swans but the hissy one was a bit far away for me to take a photo. I’m glad you liked the haiku. I’m working on my next poetry collection at the moment. 🙂
