About the Book
The Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet is a collection of poetry and flash fiction celebrating the beautiful vulnerability of the forest kingdom. It begins with the poetic tale of the kind-hearted Hedge Witch, Fern, who discovers an injured stranger in desperate need of her woodland spells and magic.
The sweet pairing learn from each other and through Fernβs guidance, Devin embraces the power of magic to leave behind his troubled past to become The Musical Poet.
The Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet, by M J Mallon is a lovely poetic collection which forms a lyrical tale of a man found in the forest and transformed, with the help of the Hedge Witch, into the poet the forest needs him to be. This enchanting tale unravels through a combination of flash fiction and poetry which explores magical realms and celebrates the forest. The playful, happy tone makes this tale the perfect short read for a palate cleanser after a more serious story where the fate of the world is at stake, or following a deep dive into the human psyche. Itβs also a light story which can be consumed within a half hour or so, if youβve got some time to kill. I used it as both, since I read it twice.
Delightfully entertaining, Kaye gives The Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet five quills.
Amanda Ross is on a school trip to Taos, New Mexico with several of her fellow creative students. She shares a room with Cleo, an anxious classmate who insists she sees ghosts. Although Amanda is determined to prove there is no such thing, she canβt seem to shake the feeling that something or someone is watching her.
Join Amanda, Cleo and their funny friend, Caleb, as they visit a rugged and beautiful landscape where a traditional hacienda, an ancient pueblo, and a haunted and spooky hotel all hold secrets to a wild and violent past.
Does Cleo really see ghosts? Can Amanda escape the eerie wind that follows her everywhere? Perhaps The Day of the Dead will reveal the mysteries of Taos in this latest adventure of Amandaβs travels.
My review
Amanda in New Mexico Ghosts In The Wind
It’s always fun to read an Amanda adventure. This one is set in the mountains, in Taos in New Mexico.Β I’ve read several in the series now and can recommend.Β Β This was a lovely halloween and anytime read for kids and educational too. In this book the other two main characters are Caleb, a cute, jokey boy, and Cleo who is afraid of ghosts. Amanda is our intrepid explorer who writes for kidblog. I particularly enjoyed the sections on The Day of The Dead, wild west characters, and the spooky bits! The ending had a nice uplifting touch which made me smile.
It’s always a joy to go travelling with Amanda!
Highly recommended for kids and sure their adults will enjoy too!

Greed led them in. Destitution kept them there. Adam and Becky Hargreaves stumble upon a foreboding gothic-style property in the secluded Spanish countryside, and believe theyβve found the ideal business opportunity. But shortly after moving in with Nerea, their truculent teenager, Melissa, their baby daughter, and Rose, Beckyβs infirm mother, a series of disturbing events shatter their dreams of success.
When ghostly orbs and manifestations of the dead roam the corridors threatening their business and their lives, steadfast Adam refuses to believe their home is possessed. As he withdraws from his family, Becky and her sparring stepdaughter Nerea must learn to work together to solve the ulcerating secret lying in the dark heart of the house before history repeats itself.
What happened all those years ago during Francoβs regime? Why are so many spirits of young children still wandering the halls of the retreat? And who or what evil being is keeping them there?
As rivers of blood run deep within the bowels of the property, the family finds themselves entangled in an age-old promise with the devil. Who can they trust? How can they discover what happened in the blood-chilling past before time runs out?
Only one family member will make it out alive. Who can outwit the black soul and his disciples lying in wait inside the walls of Ravenβs Retreat?
This was a engrossing read from start to finish. Creepy, well plotted and intriguing too. Perfect for the Halloween season and for everyone who likes a good creepy and at times blood curdling story. It was darker than I expected and twisted in places too. So not a read for the faint-hearted. Expect creepy house, ghost, coven, sacrificial practices, care home wierdness, witch covens, and sexual scenes in keeping with the imaginative plotline. Excellent storytelling from Michelle E. Northwood. I’ve read her memoir Fishnets in The Far East which couldn’t be more different, shows great versatility as an author.
My rating 5 stars. Recommended read but check the trigger β οΈ warnings.

MJ’ Book Reviews
A short halloween quick and enjoyable read about revenge and the mistakes and shortcomings we have as humans. Any action born out of revenge ain’t going to be a good choice! Not scary more relationship based with voodoo element. Thought the ending was a fun twist. I think the story could be interpreted in different ways but my take was her guilt manifesting.
My rating 4 stars.
Recommended for those who like to celebrate this season but don’t want to read a book which is full of gore, or is too scary.

Iβve been an avid reader all my life. I can still remember the excitement that surged through me the first time I realized I could decipher words. Thereβs nothing I love more than losing myself in a story.
Oddly enough, I never had any ambition to be a writer. But I wound up in mid-life with a story that begged to be told. Not just any story, but a true story that rivaled any fiction creation. Through fictitious characters, the tale came to life in an intricately woven tale that encompasses four books. Not satisfied to stop with the books, I released music CDs of original music to match the time period of each story segment. In conclusion, to bring the story full circle, I published a book of poetry and art. I was done.
Wrong!
The story ideas keep coming, and I donβt intend to turn off the creative fountain.
I love all things metaphysical and often include those aspects in my stories.

The sweet pairing learn from each other and through Fernβs guidance, Devin embraces the power of magic to leave behind his troubled past to become The Musical Poet.
Poetry/flash fiction titles in section one of the collection include:
The Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet, Rain Forest Love, A Forest Baby Boy, A Forest Baby Girl, A Modern Witch, Rock of Mine, Chester Don & I, The Network of Trees, More Trees Not Less, Two Boys Watching War, Mum Climbing Trees, Letβs Play, The Scorched Tree, Owlβs Holiday Home, A Manβs Holiday Home, A Childβs Excitement, The Teddy In The Woods, Run! The Organutans, All Hallowβs Eve Candy Girl The Forest Bash, Dreaming At Halloween, A Face on Bark, Golden Willow Tree, Rainbow β Parasol of Light, Lollipop Sunshine Tree.
In Section two I pay tribute to the following poets: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Evangeline, Ruby Archer, King Forest, Bliss Carman, Woodland Rain, Emily Dickinson, Who Robbed the Woods, Rupert Blake, Stopping by The Woods on A Winter Evening,Oscar Wilde, In the Forest.
With my poetry inspired by their works:
The Forest Weeps, The Forest King, Raindrops and Childhood Dreams, The Woodland Treasures, Winter Woodland Moon, Child Me.
A beautiful book inspired by, and a nod to, the mystical and the natural world around us. Marjorie Mallon has used both fiction and poetry to craft a selection of flash fiction for the first part of the book, about the Hedge Witch and the Musical Poet, as well as other scenarios, interspersed with verse. The second section is devoted to poetry inspired by various famous poets. A lovely book to delve into when you want a little slice of magic.Ritu Bhathalβs review of The Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet (goodreads.com)
An enchanting collection of poetry and short fiction about the natural world and mankindβs relationship with it. I especially liked the title piece, which epitomises a longing I have, to live a simple pared back life in harmony with nature. I love trees, marvel at their beauty and splendour, and the authorβs similar appreciation comes across in these pages, is apparent in the vivid imagery in poems such βWinter Woodland Moonβ. Forest destruction and the effects of global warming are lamented in βThe Network of Treesβ and βThe Scorched Treeβ.
There is a haunting, melancholic tone to several of the poems, such as βA Face on Barkβ. One describes an old ruin, in which a vase on a table is βfilled with muddy water where fresh flowers once bloomedβ. My favourite is βA Modern Witchβ, who βoften sits alone in whimsy, in crowded places, remembering ancient timesβ.
I shall revisit this collection, can picture myself doing so in summertime, at my favourite spot, sitting beneath the horse chestnut in my garden, its magnificent canopy overhead, sunlight filtering through the leaves, savouring this magical ode to trees. Rosemary Mairs.
The Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet is a marvelous collection of stories and poems that have been inspired from personal experiences of Mallon. Many characters in this book have a magical connection with Mother Nature. The compassion of the robin, the deer, the willow tree and the girl in the forest has been beautifully captured in βThe Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet.β In sharp contrast is βThe Network of Trees,β which highlights the apathy of people toward the forests, as βnew houses are needed, so we must make way!β
βRock of Mineβ and Chester, Don & I evoke lovely memories of childhood. βLetβs Playβ makes a subtle appeal to children to come back to the forest to play in the natural surroundings. M.J. has a knack of telling stories through wonderful imagery and poetry.Balroop Singh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, Musical Poetry Reviewed in Australia on 18 June 2023
Iβm a big fan of Marjorie Mallonβs poetry and flash fiction, and The Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet doesnβt disappoint. Clearly, the author is a Dendrophile (like me!) and the early part of the book builds a picture of a magical forest. There is a pervading lament, a cry for a bygone era, a desire to return to lost times that is mournful yet beautiful. Later poems, such as All Hallows Eve Candy Girl are marvellously imaginative, with clever alliteration. There is also a certain poignancy in two poems that feature the authorβs parents, which I found immensely touching. Overall, a stunning collection. Highly recommended.

A unique and beautifully written collection of poetry and fiction weaved magically together. I love trees and nature, so a forest setting pulled me right in. Section one starts off with βThe Hedge Witch & The Musical Poet.β A whimsical tale of an injured man, Dale, found by a magical woman, Fern, who takes him in to heal. It was great to see a couple more poetic pieces continue this sweet journey. Section two offered poetry based on some famous poems. The beautiful imagery captivated me throughout this book. I appreciated all the poetry and prose, especially βThe Hedge Witch & The Musical Poetβ but here are more favorites, βRock of Mine,β βThe Forest King,β and βThe Scorched Tree.β It was great to see a couple of samples that I enjoyed from βMr. Sagittarius Poetry and Proseβ included. If you love poetry and flash fiction, especially the forest and magic, this is a collection you wonβt want to miss. I plan to add the print version to my bookshelves so I can keep enjoying it.
This is a lovely book, I was sad when I turned over and realised Iβd reached the end. This is a haunting serenade to trees, wistful and serene. A little book to capture the beauty of nature and the essence of forests. I thoroughly enjoyed this ode to trees. You can dip in and out or read it in one go, and if youβre like me youβll be full of thoughts and memories and longing to walk within forests again, and if weβre very quiet maybe weβll hear the trees whispering these poems…
NN Light’s 5 star review:
Forests are a kingdom unto themselves with magic waiting to be discovered.
I love reading flash fiction and poetry. In this stunning collection, the author writes emotive poems and prose with the theme of forestry. Each poem tells a story, and the reader is left to ponder its significance. The poetic tale of the hedge witch touched me deeply.
The imagery reflected in this collection is impressive. Each word has been carefully chosen by a wordsmith to evoke a feeling, a memory, or even an unspoken truth. The author is a very talented poet and I feel honored to have read this collection.
