Beta Reading Stage

You’ve written ‘THE END’ on your first, second, eighth – or if you’re me it will mostly likely be my third draft. You know it’s not perfect, but you’re happy you have taken your manuscript as far as you can. What next?

Alpha / Beta readers

As I approach the end of my first draft this concept is becoming more than just a twinkle in my eye. It’s quietly growing into the elephant in the corner of the room.

What are beta readers? How do I get one? How long will it take? Will they tear my work to pieces?

My Kyrosmagica Review of A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

th

Hi. Welcome to Kyrosmagica.

Time to do a review, what’s on the cards today? A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, that’s what.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London—but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her ‘proper adventure’.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive—trickier than they hoped.

My review:

I’m a huge Victoria Schwab fan so I was expecting to love A Darker Shade of Magic and I was not disappointed.

There are so many appealing elements in this novel:

Magic, of course!

Kell’s fabulous coat.

Different Londons.

Pirate theme.

Kick ass heroine.

Well crafted villians.

Fantasy.

A magical stone.

Cross dressing girl dressed as a sea Captain.

Soul seals! You need to read the book to find out what these are!

TIP: Be aware that this is one of those books that you have to allow time to develop as you read. It  starts off with a fair amount of  detail about the magical world, introducing the reader to the contrasting world of the different Londons.

Sense of smell is used in a very interesting way to convey the different qualities of the Londons.

Black London is “the lost city,” that had to be sealed off from the other worlds.

After Black London fell  the doors connecting the Londons were closed: “Now only the Antari possessed enough power to make new doors, and even then only they could pass through them.”

Grey London is the magic-less city. When Kell, our fabulous protagonist with his very peculiar coat. “It had neither one side, which would be conventional, nor two which would be expected, but several, which was, of course, impossible. When Kell inhales the scent of Grey London he smells smoke.

Red London is where everybody learns to understand magic, it’s the healthy empire, Kell’s home. Red London smells to Kell  of home, but to others it smells of flowers.

White London’s magic is savage It is the starving world, which smells of blood. In Grey, read and white London there is,
“A fixed point,” The Stone’s Throw tavern, though In White London this establishment is called The Scorched Bone.

In this world there are only two magical Antari left: “Now, Kell and Holland seemed to be the last of a rapidly dying breed.”

“And Antari  could speak to blood. To life, to magic itself.”

But the characters of Kell and Holland couldn’t be more different.  Holland is under the control of the King and Queen of White London, Astrid and Athos Dane whose palace is a fortress with a stone forest of people, that they are rumoured to have killed. Don’t doubt it –  these two rulers are EVIL, EVIL, EVIL!!

Holland may be living and breathing but he is under the control of Astrid and Athos : “It was a voice (Holland’s voice) like a shadow in the woods at night. Quiet and dark and cold.”

When Barron and Holland have a confrontation, Victoria Schwab enriches the story by using the sense of smell once again:  “Holland smelled of ash and blood and metal.”

Kell shouldn’t be moving between the London’s collecting trinkets but it seems he can’t help himself. He is an adventurer and his princely brother Rhy warns him, “Transference is treason.”

Kell is such an engaging character, poor Kell, he doesn’t really belong, in fact he seems to think of himself as an object: “I feel more like a possession than a prince.”

Though he is fiercely fond and protective of his princely brother Rhy.” Kell has lived in the palace of red London since he was a young boy but he has been marked by a spell that makes him forget, “he suspected that the king and queen themselves had sanctioned it.”

Even in red London Kell’s one black eye, “Marked him always as other. ” Kell’s blood, when paired with the token (given to him by King George), allowed him to move between the worlds.

The story really cranks up a huge notch when we met Lila Bard, she is most definitely my favourite character in A Darker Shade of Magic: “Lila Bard lived by a simple rule: if a thing was worth having, it was worth taking.”

When we first meet Lila she dresses as a man, and nicks a watch off a gentleman.  She loves the thrill of living dangerously. Delilah Bard wants to sail away on a pirate ship. She has a wise side to her brought about by her daily life in the school of hard knocks, she sees that “you (Kell) may want for things but you need for nothing.”

The owner of the Stone’s Throw,  Barron,  appreciates her qualities and seems to have a soft spot for her. Kell takes a while to truly understand Lila:  “And for the first time, Kell saw Lila. Not as she wanted to be, but as she was. A frightened, albeit clever, girl trying desperately to stay alive.”

Kell is in possession of the Black London Stone, this Talisman transfers hands many times but Kell  is initially divested of it by none other than Lila Bard herself ! She has a moral code of sorts so she doesn’t steal from him and leave him empty handed she leaves behind a token, her kerchief.

This stone in the wrong hands could have disastrous results.  The adventure really livens up when Kell and Lila attempt to take  the stone back to Black London.

“I’m not going to die, ” she said. “Not till I’ve seen it.”

“seen what?”

Her smile widened. ” Everything.”

There are so many wonderful quotes that I have incorporated into this review but this one is my favourite of all:

“Delilah bard had finally escaped, sailed away. Not with a ship, but with a stone.”

BEWARE!!!!!!

Though I loved this book I did find some difficulties with some of the events towards the end of the book. Holland wanted to die? “It was relief,” that crossed his face. Ok, I sort of got this, he wasn’t his own man he was under Athos and Astrid’s thumb but the way he just kind of gave in at the very last showdown just didn’t seem quite right to me. Also, I was quite surprised by the way in which Lila kills the young guard who is guarding Astrid. The guard asks to die quickly, Lila kills him without hesitating. I realise that she had no choice but I would have liked to see a moment of sadness following his death but somehow she just moves on too quickly and seems a little too brutal for my liking at this juncture in the book. I realise she’s tough, and will kill if necessary but the moral code that she obviously has seems momentarily to have been forgotten. Though I really did enjoy how Kell knew that Astrid wasn’t Lila right at the end “Because she said please.”

Highly recommended for readers of Fantasy, YA, and Magic.

My rating:

4.5 stars.

Indie Success –10 things that really matter

Wonderful post about getting your book out there via self publishing from Sue Vincent, had to reblog.

Sue Vincent's avatarSue Vincent's Daily Echo

Hans Christian Andersen by Anne Grahame Johnstone Hans Christian Andersen by Anne Grahame Johnstone

There are a lot of articles and reports out there giving various and often conflicting figures about the Indie book market. All seem to agree, however, that the percentage of Indie writers and publishers is huge and growing. You only have to read a few Indie books to realise there is some seriously good stuff out there and marvel at the ingenuity and diversity of the imaginations from which they were born.

Yet there is still a stigma attached to independently published work. There are those, it is true, who see it only as a way to make a fast buck and churn out little more than rubbish. These are not writers in my opinion and it is not of their books I speak, they are little more than opportunists; marketeers who, seeing a potentially lucrative product churn out a cheap imitation that…

Writer’s Quote Wednesday: Dr Seuss

050515_2017_writersquot1

Welcome to my blog Kyrosmagica.

Join in the fun it’s time for  Writer’s Quote Wednesday http://silverthreading.com/2015/06/03/writers-quote-wednesday-douglas-Jerrold/

I haven’t been able to do much blogging this week I’ve been without internet for nearly a week, imagine that! I’ve been popping into the library to use free Wi-Fi when I can. So this post is a day out,  never mind, that seems quite appropriate given that this post is about Fantasy. Today as Dr. Seuss would say it’s Fox in Socks Day, (Wear Crazy Socks) Thursday instead of Green Eggs and Clothes day, (Wear something Green) Wednesday! Well of the two I prefer to wear crazy socks so a day late is lucky for me now I can wear some crazy socks! Yippeeeeeeeee!!!!!

Just recently I joined a reading group in Cambridge and one of the questions that we were asked was “Do we like fantasy?” I thought this was such an odd question, because for me all writing is a form of fantasy, unless the work in question is non-fiction. Fantasy is the thread that keeps our imagination nurtured, without it surely we will be at a terrible loss? Anyway to cut a long story short I was quite horrified when several people put up their hands indicating that they didn’t like fantasy.

If I was a cat I’d look something like this:

cat-633081__180

Who were these people? How can you not like fantasy? Did something terrible happen to them when they were children, so that they were unable to live and breathe fantasy?

So this week for Colleen’s Writer’s Quote Wednesday I’m going to focus on fantasy combined with a touch of humour now isn’t that a winning combination?

Definition of Fantasy:

the faculty or activity of imagining impossible or improbable things:
“his researches had moved into the realms of fantasy”
Look at those synonyms imagination, creativity, fancy, invention, originality, vision, come on what’s not to like?

Here’s a wonderful quote from a fellow I much admire, Dr. Seuss :

th4ODSYPW2

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a Telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

Dr. Seuss.

Author Profile – courtesy of Goodreads.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, MA. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who he wed in 1927. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. In some of his works, he’d made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase “Quick, Henry, the Flit!”

In 1936 on the way to a vaction in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship’s engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to at least moderate success.

During WW II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Captain Geisel would write for Frank Capra’s Signal Corps Unit (for which he won the Legion of Merit) and do documentaries (he won Oscar’s for Hitler Lives and Design for Death). He also created a cartoon called Gerald McBoing-Boing which also won him an Oscar.

In May of 1954, Life published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel’s publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important, asked him to cut the list to 250 words (the publishers idea of how many words at one time a first grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him published The Cat in the Hat, which went on to instant success.

In 1960 Bennett Cerf bet Geisel $50 that he couldn’t write an entire book using only fifty words. The result was Green Eggs and Ham. Cerf never paid the $50 from the bet.

Helen Palmer Geisel died in 1967. Theodor Geisel married Audrey Stone Diamond in 1968. Theodor Seuss Geisel died 24 September 1991.

Also worked under the pen name:
Theo Le Sieg

Chicken Soup for the Blogger’s Soul?

Well done Debby Carroll. Very good news. Great to hear that one of your submissions have been accepted. Reblogging this to encourage others to keep on going, myself included.

Deborah Drezon Carroll's avatartalesfromthefamilycrypt

In my search of good places to submit original writing, one of the first I came across was the juggernaut that is the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books. Having received many of these books as gifts over the years, I was intrigued. So with my usual, What the hell, attitude, I wrote an essay and sent it off to their call for submissions on Volunteering and Giving Back. (They have a boatload of titles and topics so check out their website and write an essay to submit.)

Much to my shock delight, I’m in! The book is publishing in August and my essay entitled, “A Little Lipstick,” will be inside.

So, the point of this post, is this. If you are a writer or a wannabe writer, adopt the useful, “What the Hell” attitude. Send off your work and send positive vibes into the universe. Or, do as I did…

Another Freestyle Writing Challenge!

coffee-667052__180

Another Freestyle Writing challenge hot on the heels of the last one, well not as hot as I’d have liked, as I’ve been without internet for a few days, this challenge comes from fellow blogger Dorne Whale: https://dorneawhale.wordpress.com/2015/05/24/free-style-writing-challenge/

Please scroll down to the end of this post to see the new topic if you’d like to take part in this challenge.

My topic this time is:

Have you ever seen a ghost and what would you do if you did see one?

I think the quick answer is freak out! I do think my parent’s house in Edinburgh is haunted so I thought I’d use that as a bit of inspiration, anyway here is my timed challenge effort:

 Ghost Doll

I pushed at the door, but the door wouldn’t budge it seemed as if something or somebody was pushing hard against it, but how could that be? I was alone in the house. I tried again, this time the door groaned and inched forward little by little. I saw a figure glowing in front of me, a shimmering apparition, with the saddest face I have ever seen. She was carrying a doll, dressed in exactly the same dress as her. They both  had the same tragic expression etched on their faces.

doll-626790__180

“You pushed so hard,  I had no choice, I had to let you through,” said the ghostly figure.

“I wish I hadn’t,” I replied stepping back, retreating further into the shadows.

“It’s ok,” she replied, ” I only want a friend, my doll isn’t much company. She’s so miserable it makes me sad.”

I was beginning to think that I was in the midst of some strange dream and I would suddenly awake but no,  this ghostly child continued to talk to me.

“I’m sorry I frightened you the other night. It used to be my bed you know, and sometimes I like to stretch out there too.”

“I wish you hadn’t, it really scared me. I thought I was being possessed.”

“I only wanted to lie down and cuddle my doll.  I’m sorry if I scared you. Please could we be friends?  I’m so very lonely.”

I couldn’t come up with a serious one this week, somehow think and fresh just didn’t lead me down that path. In fact I’d say that these two prompt words took me to some rather strange places. Sorry failed miserably, on the plus side I came up with two funny ones instead!

Writer’s Quote Wednesday: Bethany Hamilton

050515_2017_writersquot1

Here’s my post for Writer’s Quote Wednesday, if you’d like to participate too, here’s the link to Colleen’s blog: http://silverthreading.com/2015/05/27/writers-quote-wednesday-j-k-rowling/

I love the sea, and I would have loved to surf, so the story of Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton really touched me.  On the 31st October 31, 2003, thirteen year old Bethany Hamilton was enjoying the waves  on Tunnels Beach, Kauai, with best friend Alana Blanchard, Alana’s father, Holt, and brother Byron. A tiger shark attacked Bethany severing her left arm just below the shoulder.  This terrible tragedy rather than curtailing her surfing career led her to inspiring surfing fans from all over the world. The first thing she asked after the surgery was “When can I surf again?” and just three weeks after this life threatening incident she returned to her board.

I learnt of her amazing story just this week whilst watching Soul Surfer on Netflix. This wonderfully inspiring film features an all-star cast, including Anna Sophia Robb and Helen Hunt, with Carrie Underwood in her film debut, and Dennis Quaid.

Here’s just one of many wonderful quotes from this remarkable woman:

“Life is a lot like surfing… When you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave.”

Taken from her autobiography:
Bethany Hamilton, Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board

th

Goodreads synopsis:

They say Bethany Hamilton has saltwater in her veins. How else could one explain the passion that drives her to surf? How else could one explain that nothing—not even the loss of her arm—could come between her and the waves? That Halloween morning in Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany responded to the shark’s stealth attack with the calm of a girl with God on her side. Pushing pain and panic aside, she began to paddle with one arm, focusing on a single thought: “Get to the beach….” And when the first thing Bethany wanted to know after surgery was “When can I surf again?” it became clear that her spirit and determination were part of a greater story—a tale of courage and faith that this soft-spoken girl would come to share with the world.

Soul Surfer is a moving account of Bethany’s life as a young surfer, her recovery after the attack, the adjustments she’s made to her unique surfing style, her unprecedented bid for a top showing in the World Surfing Championships, and, most fundamentally, her belief in God. It is a story of girl power and spiritual grit that shows the body is no more essential to surfing—perhaps even less so—than the soul.

And because I couldn’t just stick to one quote I had to include this one too:

0d659f73482ef8ca9ccdfdb08e364306

In 2004 Bethany won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete[7] and also received the Courage Teen Choice Award.

To finish off this heart-warming post what could be more wonderful that this:  on February 9, 2015, Bethany Hamilton and her husband announced that they were expecting their first child, a baby boy due in early June. Many congratulations to her, such an amazing role model, and a wonderful human being.

My Free Style Writing Challenge : The Hurt Behind The Smile

coffee-667052__180

Julia of My Red Page  kindly linked me into a Free style Writing Challenge from mary tyas who has a very interesting blog about Bali: http://baliinfoblog.com/

My prompt from Julia is What Does Make You Smile, strangely enough I didn’t really  focus on what makes you smile, I kind of looked beneath the layers of the smile to see something else. But that’s me always trying to complicate things and make them darker. I do like to contrast the lighter qualities of life with dark hidden meanings and it shows in some but not all of my writing.

Link to Julia’s My Red Page: https://myredpage.wordpress.com/

But so that I don’t sound like a miserable git, here are some of the things that make me smile:

I looked out of my window today and I saw a squirrel whizzing across a fence, followed by a black cat doing acrobatics on a separate section of fencing. These kind of animal antics are quite common in our garden as we live by the country park. Our house is surrounded by trees and we often hear birds singing, their sweet birdsong is a delight. Unless it’s at the crack of dawn and then it’s not so welcome!

Unfortunately at night time the bats come out and they scare the living daylights out of me, as soon as I see a bat, I scream and run into the house and hide. So bats definitely don’t make me smile!

More things that make me happy, well I received two postcards from my daughter’s school saying she’s doing well in Science and English, that definitely made me break out into a smile.  I text my eldest daughter on Saturday morning to see if she managed to get some sleep last night in her campus accommodation, (she had her exam on Saturday) and she replied, yes apart from someone maniacally laughing in the middle of the night. Maybe the maniac had an exam too!

Tasty food makes my lips form a greedy grin. I love to see the sun shine, children play, hear laughter, and see friends smile. I love to splash about in the water, especially on a hot, sunny day, that makes me grin insanely, because I’m a true water baby. I like to see my cactus form tiny buds of flowers, or my orchids bloom, that plants a happy smile on my face too.   So lots of things make me smile but it is the simplest events that really make me smile, and then that smile can easily navigate its way to my eyes. Eyes smile much more than lips ever do. So yes, every moment can be a precious memory…..

memory-771967__180

So here’s my short snippet, which I have entitled: The Hurt Behind The Smile.

Timer set…READY…STEADY…WRITE:)

Wow, this is hard I’m not used to writing in a short timescale but here goes.

My topic is… WHAT DOES MAKE YOU SMILE?

(YOUR NEW TOPIC IS AT THE END OF THIS POST)

girls-303048__180

Title: The Hurt Behind The Smile

A smile, the simplest form of human expression but don’t let it fool you. Alana appeared happy but was she really? Was this an illusion to confuse you? Her lips formed a smile, but her face suggested pain and hurt. Louise’s smile began with her eyes. The secret of a true smile, the eyes cannot deceive. They say the eyes are a mirror to the soul and I guess it’s true. Louise’s eyes shone like twinkling diamonds of true forgiveness, whereas Alice’s still held sharp shards of pain.   So next time you smile remember this tale and smile like you really mean it with your whole heart and soul, don’t leave anything behind, because it isn’t what makes you smile that really matters it’s the sentiments buried deep in your heart that will shine through.
