Edinburgh Festival: Photographs of My Art Gallery Visit

WP_20150822_003

A fantastic motto to live your life by, Martin Creed’s message: Everything Is Going To Be Alright. Keep positive folks…. Yes, Everything is alright, my mum is doing really well after her operation, I’m so pleased, and relieved. She’s such a strong lady, I’m in awe of her really I am. My brother mentioned that he thought he’d have to wheel her out of the hospital after her operation but no my mum was up on her feet telling the nurses she wanted to go home! Amazing!

WP_20150822_006

I thought I’d share with you this visit to the Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art. It was one of the highlights of my trip to Edinburgh as I got a chance to go out with my mum, just the two of us, which was a treat in itself. She is still a bit delicate after her operation, no dancing for a while yet, so we had a coffee and a chat in the café and afterwards I did a super fast tour, while she read a book and had a well deserved rest.

I always like to pop into these two art galleries when I’m in Edinburgh. This time I just managed to go to Gallery One, but that’s alright as Gallery One is my favourite, it’s always full of inspiring art, has a lovely shop, and a coffee shop too. It is well worth a visit if you are ever in Edinburgh. Currently there is an exhibition of Roy Lichtenstein’s work at Gallery One, as part of Reflections, which is on until 10th January 2016 so still plenty time to see this free exhibition. The gallery is located at 75 Belford Road, Edinburgh, EH4 3DR, and is easily accessible via bus.

WP_20150822_001

These images caught my eye as I went up the stairs, I liked the idea of looking through the window panes and seeing the view divided into six panes of awesomeness! So I nipped down to the café and told my mum that I wanted to take some photos, and then I popped up the stairs to snap these two images. Yes, I was running around that gallery like a sprinter. We were on a tight time frame, it really was a flying visit, as I was going out later in the day to the …….. yes you guessed it, the Book Festival.

WP_20150822_002

Here’s another  view of the same spot from the outside, with a Miró sculpture in the foreground.

WP_20150822_004

Oh and on the way out…. I came face to face with the Sunken Statue, on the way to….. the bus stop!

WP_20150822_005

Kind of sinister isn’t it? This is what happens to you if you spend too much time in art galleries you sink into the concrete of life and partially disappear! That unsuspecting lady and her child making their way out of the gallery better watch out, they’re heading for a Doctor Who moment if you ask me, they’re following the straight line to oblivion! Poor unsuspecting fools. Yes, the sunken statue doesn’t look too happy does he? Can’t blame him, whatever has happened to his nipples? They look hammered in. Must be the shock, poor chap!!

Edinburgh Book Festival #edbookfest : Cat Clarke, and Kat Ellis

untitled

Being an aspiring children’s and YA author I was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend the Edinburgh Book Festival talk The Disappeared by Cat Clarke and Kat Ellis on Tuesday 18th of August, as you can see I even managed to get a photo with the two of them, even though I was at the end of the signing queue! Yes, I’m a slow coach, I meandered around, had a cup of coffee, perused the books, and then joined the queue. Kat was occupied signing another book so I spoke to Cat first. Cat delighted me by asking if I’d like to be in the photo too! I was a bit concerned that I might spoil the photo, sometimes I’m not very photogenic, I pull these silly faces, but fortunately this didn’t turn out too badly.

Is this the first time that I’ve seen Cat Clarke?

No, though it is the first time I’ve spoken to her in person. I heard her speaking a year ago at YALC in London, here’s the link to that talk if you’d like to read about it: https://atomic-temporary-67364188.wpcomstaging.com/2014/07/18/im-too-sexy-for-this-book-yalc-panel-event/

My experience of the talk

During this year’s Edinburgh Book Festival talk I managed to get a seat fairly near the front, and was about to get my note pad out when I realised I’d lost my pen, so this write up is purely from the powers of my failing memory so if I get any details wrong, Cat/Kat don’t blame me, it’s that missing pen’s fault!

The chair person Daniel Hahn started by saying that it was bound to get confusing with a Cat/Kat in the audience, how do you differentiate? Daniel found a way round this conundrum as all good interviewers do, and the conversation flowed very freely. I was struck by Cat’s friendly disposition, and her tendency to smile and wave at the audience. She had a few members of the audience waving back! Next time I’ll be more than happy to wave back Cat, now I’ve met you in person!

The first question that Daniel posed set the tone for the talk, light and silly, which is great, I like light and silly.

It went something like this: If you had a choice of muffins for hands or squirrels for feet which would you choose? Cat C went for those squirrels, but sounds like she kind of liked the notion of regenerating muffins, (her suggestion.)  Kat E stuck with the muffins, like me she must have a sweet tooth, and a few fillings. Cat C was quick to point out that Muffins are not very practical she added that you wouldn’t be able to do the gardening with muffins for hands. True, but you wouldn’t starve either.  Oh by the way my favourite muffins are blueberry, yum…. donations on a plate, please….

Talking about squirrels just recently we had a very high fence built and squirrels have taken to running across the top of this new fence at double time, a bit like a trapeze artist balancing on a wire, except they kind of do a manic version of it, I always find it highly entertaining, it’s my own little Squirrel Circus Show what more could a girl ask for ……..

Moving on from squirrels and muffins, and back to the talk, the topic of conversation kind of gravitated towards Welsh, or to be exact writing novels in Welsh and this question was directed at Kat.  Kat is Welsh, or at least she says she is. Kat has forgotten how to write in Welsh! Maybe she’s an imposter? Can she sing? That’s normally a good way to tell, Tom Jones comes to mind, the interviewer should have asked her to sing a bar or two of Send in The Clowns. Kat’s a new breed, an author pretending to be Welsh. Only kidding Kat, I’m sure you are Welsh. Yes, I believe you, the penny dropped when you said that if your novels were written in Welsh there would be far more spelling mistakes! Lots of people can’t spell in English so that sounds plausible.

Cat Clark doesn’t write in any foreign languages at least I don’t think she does. She started her writing journey writing non-fiction, but this type of factual writing didn’t allow her an adequate platform for her squirrel like imagination, so fiction was the next obvious path to take. Cat says she thinks like a teenager, and believe me when she said this I didn’t bat an eyelid. So our teenage minded Cat decided to write Fiction, aka stories that lie to the reader, yes that’s how the interviewer sold it to us. A whole new genre: Stories That Lie, it has a certain ring to it doesn’t it? Sounds far more exciting, and interesting if you ask me, great decision Cat…

Both Cat Clarke and Kat Ellis seem to have aspects in common in their recent writing, both of these novels are about disappearing children. Moreover these two authors are drawn to the weird. Cat Clarke admitted that she was a bit of a weird kid being fascinated by child abduction, the topic for her new book, The Lost and The Found. Similiarly Kat E likes to go to circus’s with her niece and imagine what it would be like for the circus performers to befall some horrible accident. Yes, this talk ended up being a bit of a confessional for weirdness, but Cat came out with the most shocking gambit of all. She is fascinated by shark attacks, what it would be like to be attacked, and the scars you’d have. After this particular announcement silence followed, shocked audience silence, possibly Cat might have gone too far? Hope there weren’t any shark attack victims in the audience. Yes Cat, authors are a weird bunch, and by the sound of it, you’ve got this weirdness on pointe.

So the discussion progressed to differences between these two authors. Cat Clarke kind of summed it up when she mentioned the weathervane at the beginning of Kat’s book, she’s in awe of the fantasy world that Kat has created. Me too.  Daniel Hahn was quick to point out that Cat’s non fantasy based writing rocks too.

Blackfin Sky (great title by the way,) is Kat Ellis’s debut novel. During the course of the interview it transpired that Kat E did indeed have other manuscripts tucked away, apparently Blackfin Sky leapfrogged past the others, to claim the first spot in the hall of fame of first novels and is one of the nominees for ….  Drumroll……..

First Book Award, vote for your favourite here, voting closes at 5pm on Friday 16th October: www.edbookfest.co.uk

There were readings, as there always are at these talks, hey we’re talking books, who wants to come to an author’s event and not hear the author/s talk? Cat C leapfrogged past the first chapter and read from her second chapter and Kat Ellis kept fantasy simple and read from her first chapter.

Here’s some short snippets:

Kat Ellis, Blackfin Sky, 1st Chapter

Silas’ spirit had inhabited the rusting weathervane for many years. From his perch on the school roof he watched the townsfolk of Blackfin through his empty eye socket as they buzzed through their lives beneath him, no more significant than the grains of sand piling up against the shoreline, clinging to the struts of Blackfin pier.

Doesn’t that just grab your attention? It certainly did for me!

and

Cat Clarke The Lost and The Found,  Chapter 2

I don’t believe it. I won’t allow myself to believe it. Mum’s trying to stay calm too, but I can see it in her face – something I haven’t seen for years hope. She thinks it’s different this time. They wouldn’t have called her otherwise. They think this is it. After hundreds, maybe even thousands, of crank calls and false sightings and psychics claiming Laurel was living with goat-herds in the mountains of Uzbekistan.

Again, another wonderful snippet that draws the reader in, so looking forward to reading both of these books.

Same topic two very different approaches fascinating isn’t it? That’s why I love books so much, stir a little pot of words, add a dash of magic and just see where those magical words will take you.

There were tips for writers from debut novelist Kat Ellis, her advice is to learn all you can about publishing through social media platforms such as twitter, follow those agents, (she is with the Bent Agency,) and editors.  Excellent advice from Kat, yes stalk those agents and editors, don’t let them get a day’s rest.

Neither Cat or Kat  write with a particular audience in mind. Apparently Kat didn’t do any research for her novel, sounds like it just evolved, albeit slowly, yes this writing lark takes oodles of energy and time. They tend to write what they themselves would like to read and nowadays YA is read by older people too like …… yours truly and the thoroughly accomplished and entertaining interviewer Daniel Hahn who confessed to being in his forties and reading YA. Ah, this is very relatable, us older YA readers should stick together we should have a convention or something….

So, wonderful talk, enjoyed it immensely, love being at the Book Festival, spent so much time there it began to feel like a home for home. Maybe I should pitch a tent, would have saved on bus fares.

TIP: It’s a great spot for people watching, and generally being nosy – one of my favourite pastimes, a must if you have any aspirations to be a writer……

Take a look at these photos lots of potential for imagined stories:

Edinburgh Book Festival #edbookfest Stuart Evers and Dorthe Nors

WP_20150818_003

Photo:  Stuart Evers and Dorthe Nors by Chris Close. This is a cropped image which I took at the festival of Chris Close’s wonderfully creative photos of authors participating in the Book Festival. http://www.chrisclose.com/

On Sunday 16th August I had my first Edinburgh Book Festival experience of 2015. I arrived with the intention of buying tickets for the Matt Haig lecture but this was sold out so I went to Throwing Away The Literary Rulebook with Stuart Evers and Dorthe Nors in the small intimate venue of the Writer’s Retreat.

First impressions: There was a huge queue for the Louis De Berniere talk but there didn’t seem to be anyone queuing for this lecture. My worries were soon dispelled as a queue began to form. It was certainly an interesting lecture and it is always a delight to discover two writers who I had never heard of before. Dorthe Nors read a short extract from Minnie Needs Rehearsal Space, which is from a short novella and short story collection entitled Karate Chop & Minnie Needs Rehearsal Space. Minnie Needs Rehearsal Space is written in the unusual form of headlines, and is one of the fifty-six books listed for a First Book Award. You can vote for your favourite book via this link: www.edbookfest.co.uk. Voting closes at 5pm on Friday 16th October.

Given the preponderance of social media sites such as twitter where short snappy sentences are used to good effect this style was used by Dorthe to convey a crumbling modern relationship in her novella Minnie Needs Rehearsal Space.  I was impressed by her reading and Stuart Evers reading of his novel Your Father Sends His Love.

Both of these authors shared similarities in their writing being drawn by the extraordinary aspects of the everyday lives of ordinary people.

So in the spirit of Dorthe Nors headline style and Stuart Evers love of taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary I’d like to do a bit of an experiment, a fun headline story of my visit to Edinburgh up to today. It might be a bit crazy but that’s okay, crazy’s good!

Holiday………. Race The Train Fever….. Sun ….. No I’m in Scotland

summer-832653_640

Hi,

I’m on a bit of a holiday so just a little note to let my followers know that I won’t be posting as much for a while, though I might be tempted to join in the writing #BlogBattle and I will be replying to comments so do feel free to chat. The good news is my mum is doing wonderfully well after her operation, she’s some lady, in her seventies and as feisty as ever! We’re getting our orders, tee hee, she’s a laugh. I think she even had the nurses at her beck and call, sounds like they treated her like royalty!

My journey started off terribly badly I did a crazy thing I turned up at the wrong station! In my defence I’ve never done this before, this was a first. I went to Waterbeach (our nearest station) instead of Cambridge. A few days prior to travel I had picked up my tickets from the ticket machine at Waterbeach, and somehow had it in my head that I was travelling from Waterbeach. So my husband had to try to beat the train! A racing challenge, just up his street! He drove me to the next station on the route, it was a hair-raising drive. I really thought there was no way he could do it but amazingly he did and with a few minutes to spare! Luckily the train was running two minutes late and we’d left the house in good time. Phew!!!!

The train journey was lively to say the least we had the cast of one of the shows on our carriage and they were a boisterous lot, you could tell they were actors, they liked to be noticed. I’ve never heard a bunch of people laugh so much. At one point we arrived at a place called Northallerton in North Yorkshire and they queried whether this fairy tale sounding town existed, I reckon they thought it was some sort of Narnialand.

On arrival I decided to walk through Princess Street gardens to get a feeling for Festival Fever, boy it was busy, luckily I just have one small piece of luggage with me.  I arrived at my bus stop, and guess what, wonder of wonders my mother in law was standing there apparently waiting for a bus! What are the odds of that? Amazing. Anyway we had a brief chat and then she had to dash off to find her bus, she was at the wrong stop, apparently all the buses are a bit confusing at the moment with the Festival being on.

So I’m up in Edinburgh, sans enfants and sans husband, I intend on catching up with old friends, maybe visiting the cat café in Stockbridge, going to the Book Festival, and the dance and drama events at the International Festival, and the Art galleries if I get a chance. I shall be going out with my dad for Chinese lunch, visiting my mother-in-law, catching up with my brother and generally eating too much. Yum….

I’ll be helping out with mum, cooking, and generally doing my Florence Nightingale bit. You can see why blogging has to take a back seat. Hope my mum will be able to join us out and about towards the end of next week. Unfortunately it is dreadfully busy in Edinburgh at the moment, with all the excitement of the Festivals, the town is packed so it is not very easy to manoeuvre around if you’ve just had an operation. So we will have a duty to try to keep her in, to ensure she rests, no easy task for a lady who is always so full of energy. Let the battle commence…..

I’ve packed  a couple of books to catch up on, a bit of holiday reading. My current read is  The Wrath and The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh, which is a rich descriptive read inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, I’m really enjoying this. As well as this I intend to read The Bonesetter’s Daughter by Amy Tan. “A dramatic tale of love, loss and betrayal in Provincial China, told with directness and deep feeling.” Mail on Sunday.

If I finish these two there are a wealth of detective novels in my mum and dad’s house so I don’t think I will be short of reading material, and of course I’m sure I’ll pick up some new novels at the Book Festival. How exciting!!! I love Edinburgh, me home from home, only slight gripe it’s so cold here, I don’t think I’ll be needing that sun hat and shades, a woolly hat would be more useful.

Anyway Happy Holidays, hope if you are going anywhere nice you have a wonderful time.

Bye for now.

The 3 Day Quote Challenge – Day 3 – Ingrid Bergman

couple-731185__180

“A kiss is a lovely trick

designed by nature

to stop speech

when words

become superfluous.”

ingrid-bergman-399557__180

Ingrid Bergman

Of course I had to end the 3 day 3 quote challenge on a farewell kiss!  It would have been so remiss of me not to. Absolutely believe Ingrid Bergman’s quote one hundred and ten percent.

There is nothing like a kiss especially if that certain somebody is kissing you. A kiss is the honey elixir of the soul, it speaks volumes when words carry very little or no weight. The kiss can be tentative, or tender, it can be a peck or a passionate full on don’t come up for breath number, all of which are worthy of our utmost attention, especially the last one! A, sigh, been there, done that!  It could be your first kiss, or a kiss with your granny with her false teeth out! Sorry for that gummy image but it’s one that comes to mind! It could be a smooch with your dog, even soldiers kiss  dogs.  Dogs get kisses too!

soldier-870399__180

Who could resist kissing this little kitten? I couldn’t. Cats seem to love me though, they follow me everywhere I go….. A bit of an exaggeration –  but there is a little fellow that always follows me to the bus stop, he’s so cute. I always stop, pat him, and have a little chit chat on the way to the bus, time permitting!

kitten-793652__180

All sorts of kisses can be memorable for so many reasons. I remember before I went under the surgeon’s knife way back in October my husband kissing me, that kiss meant a great deal, it calmed and reassured me. It worked a treat, I didn’t panic, it was just what the doctor ordered, the perfect prescription, no words could have been as effective!

Thank you so much to Swagata Mukherjee from Kolkata, India for nominating me to take part in this 3 day Quote challenge, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed taking part. Swagata is a PhD student in Physics. She loves to travel and is passionate about photography.

Writer’s Quote Wednesday: Sara Raasch Snow Like Ashes

060915_1859_writersquot1

Yes, it’s another  Writer’s Quote Wednesday, via my blogging pal Colleen over at SilverThreading. If you’d like to join in the fun here’s the link: http://silverthreading.com/2015/08/12/writers-quote-wednesday-roald-dahl/

The quote I’m going to feature this week is about the shivers, yes, wicked cold, a freezing dose of torture that gets right into your unsuspecting bones and just settles there. I hate the cold, my body just doesn’t like it, not one bit. My skin does this weird puckering thing, it squeezes itself into defensive mode and starts to resemble an orange, (without the bright colour I hasten to add,) yes crinkly peel skin that’s what I have when it’s cold. It’s not a look I’d recommend! On top of that I get chilblains on my feet, oh, and joy of joys last year I even managed to find a few of these beauties appearing on my hands. UGH…!!!!

So when I read this particular passage in Snow Like Ashes, I shivered a lot, can you imagine an orb of eternal winter? Eek,well if that’s on the cards, I’d wish for no long for some of that Winterian blood flowing in my veins! Yes a Winterian blood transfusion that’s what I’d be needing!

frozen-201495__180

“It’s so cold that foreigners have to wrap in layers of fur to walk from building to building, while our natural Winterian blood keeps us warm even in the worst conditions. And snow is everywhere, always, so much that the grass beneath it is white from lack of sun. An entire kingdom wrapped in an orb of eternal winter.”
Sara Raasch, Snow Like Ashes

Here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

Ronovan Writes #Weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge # 56 Luck And Hope

ronovan_writes_haiku_prompt_badge_autumn_2014

RonovanWrites #Weekly #Haiku #Poetry Prompt #Challenge #56 Luck&Hope

This week’s prompt words from Ron are Luck and Hope. Wow what positive and inspiring words, I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy writing this week’s haiku. Luck and hope sound pretty good from my perspective as I have just heard that my friend’s daughter is doing well in hospital, I wrote my previous haiku, no. #55 when I was still very worried about her so it’s good to know that she will soon be at home. Bless her, she’s such a fighter, such a lovely lass, I have so much admiration for her.

So Luck and Hope, this haiku started off on a serious note, as my friend’s daughter has been in a lot of pain so here’s my first Get Well haiku to hope that her pain will soon be a distant memory:

get-well-soon-264506__180

Get Well Soon

Luck will have its day

Hope’s sweetest hug will triumph

 And pain will depart

Now let’s rouse this Get Well message with a bit of  Hakuna Matataing.

My mind works in mysterious ways!

I reckon The Lion King was on my mind after chatting online with Erika at BookVentureland https://errka220.wordpress.com/ about our fondness for this great Disney movie.

If you’ve forgotten the lyrics, shame on you!

Here’s a link to remind you: http://www.metrolyrics.com/hakuna-matata-lyrics-lion-king.html

So here goes, LET’S HAKUNA MATATA,  adding a touch of cheeky haiku luck and hope to the awesomeness of this song.

hakunamatata-666532__180

Let’s Hakuna Matata

A blessing of hope

Let’s Hakuna Matata

 Lucky Worry Free !

I’m ending on another humorous note, it was bound to happen after all that Hakuna Matataing.

This one could be humorous if you win at gambling I suppose, but it might be serious if you lose…… So don’t try this Haiku at home folks, not unless you’re willing to part with your hard earned money!

The Bloggers BASH!!!! Oh What a DAY!!!

smiley-150655__180smiley-150653__180smiley-150652__180smiley-150663__180smiley-150665_640

The Bloggers Bash was wonderful, such a great idea. Well done to the committee members Sacha, http://sachablack.co.uk/  Hugh, http://hughsviewsandnews.com/  Geoff http://geofflepard.com/and Ali http://aliisaacstoryteller.com/ for organising the event and making it such a memorable day.

Just hope that this will be a regular event. Hint Hint….

Well before I left I asked my husband to take a photo of me in my new outfit. Piece of advice never ask your hubby to do this. Look at the result, out of focus and right by the bin! What was he thinking of? Why is the bin in my hallway? A temporary location as we’re still renovating our kitchen.  Yes, our fridge freezer is still in the hallway too! Luckily he didn’t take one of me beside that too!

WP_20150801_007

Yes, his photographic skills are enough to make me pull a stroppy face:

WP_20150801_004

A few daft things happened to me on the way to the Bloggers Bash. The first involves a bit of toilet humour so apologies for that in advance. I have to inflict it on you because my hubby and eldest daughter refused to listen to me on the way home in the car. They’d just been to see Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. They know what I’m like when I chat about toilet humour! Oops I can be a bit graphic…. Don’t worry I promise not to! Anyway to cut a long story short I should have gone before I left the house and I didn’t, and by the time I arrived at King’s Cross I was well…..desperate!!!!! To add to my sense of panic I found out I didn’t have a ten pence coin for the loo. Help!!! I had to ask a random stranger to part with his ten pence, kindly he took pity on me. He saw that look on my face, the one that says I NEED TO GO. Anyway mission accomplished, the relief was enormous!   Next thing on the agenda a simple requirement, what could be easier, get some money out of the cash point. Yes of course I’d forgotten that too! Where is the blooming cash point in King’s cross? Why am I such a Cambridge country bumpkin that I can’t find a cash point in King’s cross? Oh, thank god there it is. Second mission accomplished.

Now I made my way to the British Library, at this point you’d be bound to think, nothing else could possibly happen. Wrong. A very strange man was on a mission to stop random strangers in the street asking, no demanding for them to stop and talk to him. Poor guy I don’t know what was troubling him but I wasn’t sticking around to find out. This kind of thing happens to me a lot. Why? I seem to attract people who want to scare the hell out of me. Eek, he seemed to be following me, so I dashed ahead, swiftly swerving in front of people waiting at the traffic lights.

Phew arrived at the British Library, final Mission accomplished, found the Newton statue.

WP_20150801_017

As you can see at this point in the proceedings the sun wasn’t quite shining above Newton’s statue.

Then I spotted a fellow blogger Helen Jones from Journey to Ambeth. http://journeytoambeth.com/

Yes, I was pretty sure it was her, she looked just like her blog photo. Safe bet, to say hello? Luckily I was right it turned out to be Helen, and she was all smiley and nice.  Soon all the bloggers started arriving, lots of chit-chat followed. We started taking some photos, I kind of stole Helen’s idea, she took a photo of this splendid view and I did too. The sun that had been hiding now came out to play, blue skies hurrah!!!

WP_20150801_018

Then after some cake, we set off to Pizza Express for more chit-chat and of course the blogging awards.

I sat right next to Hugh, who is as delightful in real life as he is in his blog, he’s a real lovely bloke, makes you feel very welcome. So if you’re not following Hugh go and follow him! http://hughsviewsandnews.com/

Opposite me I got chatting to a blogger called Conny of Study Read Write, whose blog is “all about Studying, blogging, reading and writing with a large cup of coffee nearby.” Sounds good! https://studyreadwrite.wordpress.com/ who had come all the way from Germany. It was Connie’s birthday! Happy Birthday Conny.

To the left of me were Mel https://mbarkersimpson.wordpress.com/and Lucy, https://blondewritemore.wordpress.com/a couple of  Rachael Ritchey Writing Blog Battlers. http://rachaelritchey.com/

Lucy from Blonde Write More (the winner of the humour award) said she thought I was an American! It’s funny how you can give off a certain type of vibe from your blog. I wonder how many of my followers think that I’m American rather than British? I’m a bit of a mixture so maybe this isn’t altogether surprising. I’m part Scottish, part English and I have a Malaysian mother to just to add to the confusion.

We chatted about Conny’s forthcoming theatre trips, and lots of blogging tips and ideas were shared. The awards came next. When Sacha stood up to make her speech, she made a confession, she said she was an introvert stuck in an extrovert’s body. This kind of struck a chord in me, I’m most definitely an introvert with aspirations to be an extrovert! A tricky conversion….. One I only tend to do with full gusto when I’m drunk!  Or with my friends who have know me for a long time and know the real me. Well for an introvert Sacha did so well! The speeches were a bit difficult for me to follow as I’m a bit deaf! Long story, ear problems…. Won’t bore you with the details. Couldn’t hear too well, it was all a bit muffled, apart from Sacha’s speech, and Hugh’s (he was sitting right next to me so I could hear him fine!)

I managed to make out the winners’ names. Well done to all of them, some of the winners I’d voted for, so that was nice…

Here’s the link to all the awesome winners: http://sachablack.co.uk/2015/08/01/the-winners-of-the-annual-bloggersbash-awards-are/

My confession – I made a few gaffs probably talked a lot of nonsense, a case of a touch of social anxiety I think….  My biggest faux pas was when I asked Hugh if there was a humour category! God, I can be such an idiot sometimes, why did I say that? I voted for him! I’m not too good in large gatherings of people, it makes my brain turn to mush and I inevitably talk drivel. Lots of drivel….

Still it’s good to challenge yourself, (even if you talk drivel) to push the boundaries of your comfort zone.

It was great to talk to Esther Newton: https://esthernewtonblog.wordpress.com/

Dylan Hearn: https://authordylanhearn.wordpress.com/

Sue Vincent: http://scvincent.com/her writing journey.

Ali Isaac: http://aliisaacstoryteller.com/

Graeme Cumming:  http://graemecumming.net/author/graemeandrewcumming/

I talked to Graeme about public speaking! The prospect of public speaking fills me with gut wrenching terror but it is most definitely on my to do list. I like to zap my terror zone levels from time to time….  maybe I’m an introvert stuck in a masochist’s body? Ouch…..

My only regret as I left the Bloggers Bash is I didn’t get to talk to everyone (and share my drivel)  as much as I would have liked to, that’s the downside of a large group of people rather than a smaller gathering ….. maybe next time if I’m still invited, and not excluded for being a touch loopy, I’ll catch up with those I missed this time……..

See you at the next Bloggers Bash!!! In the meantime, come chat about it here in my comments, I’d love to hear from you.

20 Symptoms of Writeritis

Writeritis I’m a sufferer are you? All Writeritis suffered may find this a compelling Reblog from Myths from The Mirror.

D. Wallace Peach's avatarMyths of the Mirror

image from pinterest.com image from pinterest.com

As some of you know, a pervasive syndrome has troubled a segment of society for centuries. After years of research, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders finally classified these symptoms under the diagnosis: Writeritis.

Writeritis is defined as a persistent, maladaptive pattern of writing that leads to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by six (or more) of the following within a single month:

  1. A marked craving for increased amounts of writing, and longer periods of time to write.

  2. An unquenchable thirst for coffee.

  3. Repeated efforts to cut down or control word count are unsuccessful.

  4. Withdrawal occurs when writing is discontinued or suddenly reduced. Symptoms include shakiness, moodiness, and/or irritability.

  5. A tendency to rapidly relapse into extreme patterns of excessive rewriting – even after periods of abstinence or control.

  6. After writing, a compulsive urge to return and edit.

  7. An inability to initiate household chores until a plot hole is resolved.

Blog Battle Creative Writing Challenge: Spaghetti

file0002017799169

Today I’m taking part in author Rachael Richey’s Blog Battle Creative Writing Challenge: http://rachaelritchey.com/2015/06/30/blogbattle-week-16-spaghetti-entries-voting/

The challenge word this week is spaghetti. Ah this conjures up messy eating habits, and trips to Rome, well in my mind it does anyway!

The rules and details of joining in this blog battle are at the end of this post.

Here’s my entry. It’s about Spag and Hetti, twin pieces of spaghetti who are made out of the same piece of pasta but are very, very different!

The Spag and Hetti Twins

WP_20150609_007

“Hey Spag what you think about those diners last night talking about punting in Cambridge?’ asked Hetti.

“You won’t catch me a punting Hetti I’m too bendy, I’d be all over the place, toppling those fine people into  mucky water. I ain’t no punting pasta,” replied Spag.

“Yeah, you said it! And you’d be messing up the punt with your tomato sauce, me brother.”

“I’m not a messy punter, don’t get all posh Fettucine, Rigatoni on me,” said Spag with a chuckle.

Hetti looked at his brother and smiled. Spag had always been a straight up spaghetti boy, served with Mama’s fine Italian sauce whereas Hetti preferred to be shaped into something different, moulded into a new style. Hetti had ambitions. He wanted to grace the finest Italian restaurants and be served all round the world.

“Hey Hetti you remember that time we were the centre piece in a messy party?”

“Yeah how could I ever forget! That’s ingrained in my pasta memory me brother.” Hetti winced. “The pasta sauce was all over their faces, dribbling down their mucky chins. It was everywhere.” replied Hetti.

“Yeah. The kids were cracking up, giggling non-stop. Then their mama she laughed so much she started clutching her chest. I thought she was going to have a heart attack,” said Spag talking faster and faster as if his pasta sauce was about to boil over.

Hetti put on his disapproving face. Spag knew that tell-tale look so well.

“Sometimes I think people are kind of silly, laughing so much, why can’t they eat pasta properly? They don’t have a clue, they got no pasta etiquette.”

“Hey stop being such a stuck up kill joy Hetti, they were just having a laugh. Those moments are the best, real family times, rare, just natural like, no TV, no outside stuff just being together sharing moments. Those are the memories they’ll remember when the kids are long gone and all grown up. They’re precious those special times.”

“You’re such a big softy Spag, no wonder your pasta’s prone to being soggy,” said Hetti playfully punching his brother in the tummy.

“Huh, just because you’re always so Al Dente, Hetti. Why you got to be so perfect? Sometimes it gets on my nerves. For pasta’s sake Hetti just let your hair down.”

“You’re telling me to let my hair down, that’s rich. You’ve got to stop being a mummy’s boy Spag. Don’t you want to explore, see the world?” asked Hetti looking at his brother curiously.

Spag raised his voice slightly, his pasta adam’s apple wobbling as he spoke. “I see and hear all I gonna see and hear every day in Mama’s restaurant. This is the best, nothing like it. Nowhere else compares. ”

“Huh, Mama’s restaurant, you and I we may be twins cut from the same piece of pasta but I just don’t understand you. When the nurse cut our spaghetti cord she did me a big favour, she made sure that I was the more handsome longer half, me brother.”

“More handsome longer half. What a cheek! Hetti don’t you go a winding me up, twist me around your annoying fork I’m not playing that game me brother.”

“You play the Spaghetti game every day Spag, you’re all meat balls, and tomato sauce you are. Where’s your imagination? Why you not come with me? Try something different, go somewhere different. It’ll be a blast. Let’s go exploring.”

“Where you going Hetti?” asked Spag raising an inquisitive eyebrow.

“I’m going to Italy me brother to the finest city, Rome. There we can learn all about the finest pasta, culture and history. ”

“How are you going to get to Rome, this cultural oasis Hetti?” asked Spag looking at his brother’s legs. “Those bendy legs won’t carry you further than your next serving plate, you’ll need crutches, better still a wheelchair. If you’re not careful they’ll feed your sorry ass to the lions in the Colloseum.”

WP_000018WP_000035

“Ha Ha. Stop looking at me legs. I can’t help it if they’re long and thin. Anyway I’ll show you Hetti, we’ll get there you’ll see.”

“How me brother? On a helicopter, a speed boat, a jet ski, or what about one of them posh cruise ships? That sounds more your style, or maybe you’re thinking of a flight on a pasta passport? You got your passport photo yet? That I got to see!”

Hetti laughed. His long thin pasta body wiggled. “I’ll find a way Spag. I always find a way, it’s a long challenging piece of pasta to get there but I’ll get there in the end.”

“Yeah, I can just see it now Boomerang Airlines, twirl your pasta around the boomerang and you might go as far as Australia, return trip the same day.”

“Ha Ha very funny. I’ll surprise you, you’ll see. I’m the final bite ain’t I?” said Hetti standing up taller, stretching to his full height.

“That you are me brother, that you are. I tell you what, you’re me brother and I love you like we’re the same piece of pasta so if you can get to Rome I’m a coming with you. I’ve heard all about Rome, the Colloseum, The Pantheum, The Spanish Steps, The Trevi fountain.

“The beautiful Italian ladies!”

Spag sighed. Hetti sighed.

“I knew it. Never mind about family love. The ladies. Now, you want to come with me brother!”

Hetti inspected Spag as if he was searching for some magical secret ingredient. “You may be a bit on the small side but the ladies love you. I never figured that out me brother! How come? What you got that I lack?”

“You know the saying, size don’t matter. It’s me charm.”

Hetti grinned. “Yeah, and all of those lovely ladies they always smile real wistful like when they finish a plate of your finest Spag, you pasta devil, Spag!”
