Camera Lucida: The Colour of Life

This is my photo for Julia’s Camera Lucida this week. The theme this week is The Colour of Life. If you’d like to join in or check out Julia’s awesome owl post here’s the link: https://myredpage.wordpress.com/2015/09/14/camera-lucida-the-colour-of-life/

My photo of Alice’s card filled hair is a bit of a steal really as it is a photograph of my daughter Natasha’s artwork when she was studying GCSE Art but it seemed to fit the theme very well, as it is so colourful and vibrant. This week I will be doing some posts about celebrating and encouraging the artistic endeavours of young people.  Life is full of challenges and possibilities pick an Alice fantasy card and see where time will take you. I Love the wackiness of Alice in Wonderland, our lives should be full of exuberant, eccentric moments and this painting sums it up for me.

Hope you liked my post. If you’d like to share any of your children’s art work/photography in the comments below please do.

#MondayBlogs: A New Term Begins: The New Term Blues

WP_20150912_22_47_28_Pro

A new term begins, a bit like the branches of this beautiful tree it proposes many opportunities but also separates too.  We are now back to our little group of three and I expect it will take some getting used to again.

The journey to Brighton on Saturday luckily wasn’t fraught with too many issues. We arrived on the seafront, but found that we couldn’t locate the venue to pick up my daughter’s keys!  We asked a local taxi driver but she didn’t seem to have a clue so we turned the car around and managed to work it out ourselves. The weather was so blustery, as I left the car, my hair was blown all over the place, and somehow the force of the wind managed to undo my necklace! Luckily I noticed and saved it from being stolen by the wind. I walked in with my daughter and she presented her form only to be told that she needed ID to pick up her keys! Back out into the wind again, no sign of my husband or our car, he’d gone to do a loop around as this area is strictly double yellow lines, no parking allowed. So we waited, and waited, and waited. By this time I was needing the toilet! At last he reappeared, we went back armed with her ID. Problem solved. Or was it? The door wouldn’t open. UGH. Luckily we spied one of the housing advisors and she opened it for us. At last my daughter was presented with a key! Success. Off we went.

Now this is when events became even more entertaining, remember we are in Brighton and in Brighton all sorts of funny things happen, I kid you not. On the way up the hill to her new abode, which by the way is a cute terraced house, with a garden, we saw a bunch of students pushing an enormous wheeled crate up the hill, full of a truck load of moving in stuff, there even happened to be a TV in there! This made me laugh, typical students!  I remember once my other half and his then student pals lifted a cooker through the streets of Edinburgh up to their flat too! How times have changed, nowadays students are much more sophisticated, and inventive, none of this brawn, just brain, a wheeled crate is much more enterprising. Anyway, I do hope that they managed to get up the hill okay! After saying our goodbyes, wonder of wonders, an even stranger sight caught my eye. We were stuck at a junction waiting to turn right, the bus on the road ahead stopped, a man hobbled out on his crutches and popped into the off licence for his weekly supply of alcohol, the bus waited patiently and he hobbled back on with his stash at the ready! I’ve never seen that anywhere else in the world, that’s for sure. A Brighton speciality bus service, methinks….

So back to this tree, I sat underneath it in a pub in Blackheath, in London, with my youngest daughter and as I looked up I stared at its magnificent splendour. It must be one of the most striking trees I’ve ever seen. It was lit up with fairy lights, and its branches curved and twisted, in a dramatic fashion, as if it was saying look at me.  If it could speak I’m sure it would say, “Aren’t I the most poetic tree you’ve ever seen?”

That tree summed up how I feel about my daughter going into her second year at University, and my youngest starting her GCSE’s. This is going to be some year! They will have so many opportunities, and diverse paths that they might follow which will lead them in many directions, and if they work hard the sky’s the limit for what they might achieve. I do hope my eldest daughter has a bundle of fun, makes lots of new friends, and embraces each and every opportunity with a happy heart, and that my youngest daughter will have a wonderful year with much success, happiness, and fun too. There is the prom to look forward to, I know she will love this! A new dress, shoes, makeup and hair, that will put a smile on her face after all that hard work. As for me, I may have a touch of the new term blues but I’ll be okay, the leaves of that wise old tree whispered and told me so!

Are you suffering from the new term blues too? Do you have a child who has just left the nest to go to University? Do feel free to comment and share I’d love to hear from you.

Bye for now.

#MondayBlogs: Camera Lucida Photo Challenge: Week 9 The Sign

untitled

I’m thrilled to be taking part again, this is only my second week! Bit of catching up to do. Hurrah!! What am I up to? Julia at My Red Page’s Camera Lucida Photo Challenge.

Here’s a link to her blog if you’d like to take part in this fun photo challenge: https://myredpage.wordpress.com/2015/09/04/camera-lucida-the-sign/

This week’s theme: The Sign

  1. an object, quality, or event whose presence or occurrence indicates the probable presence or occurrence of something else.
  2. a gesture or action used to convey information or an instruction.
  3. a notice on public display that gives information or instructions in a written or symbolic form.

For this week’s prompt I wanted to focus on doing a light-hearted post about funny signs rather than a serious photography post.

WP_20150905_001  WP_20150905_006  WP_20150905_004

PART 1 : THE MYSTERY OF THE PARKING LOLLIPOP LIFEBUOY

My photos didn’t come out too great so with that in mind I thought I’d  challenge myself to do this funny post. How can I make fairly boring photos interesting? Apply a sprinkling of humour, a bit of an adventure, a dollop of Tintin and Snowy mystery… Me hopes.. to spice up these photos.

My first photo to the left of the trio of mediocre-ness is odd, the yellow out of focused sign says: Have you paid for parking? Don’t worry it didn’t speak to me personally I just read it while I was waiting at the bus stop.  Also that yellow STOP sign painted on the ground on that far right photo caught my eye. I think the other folks at the bus stop probably thought I’m a bit loopy taking photos of it and its neighbour a round circular object that isn’t a lollipop. The yellow parking sign is placed right beside a sharp incline with wild grasses and plants growing, no car park immediately behind or near it. Of course it makes sense if you know that you can park and ride at this site. So no real mystery after all or is there? Of course there is a mystery there has to be or else this post would be oh so dull. Here’s a clue: wonder of wonders there is a red lifebuoy next to it. That one’s specially for Julia, I know she likes the colour red. There is no lake or river here, and never has been as long as I’ve been in residence in Cambridge so why would I park my yacht, or possibly my rubber dinghy nearby, and then get a bus? More importantly why would I need saving? The Tintin and Snowy plot thickens. Don’t disappear meet them in PART 2 BELOW.

PART 2 Tintin and The Stone Wall To Nowhere.

WP_20150905_008  WP_20150905_009

Then I found the answer, I walked through the park to the other side of town looking for more strange signs and I came across this beauty for you dog walkers out there, apparently when your dog poos, fire comes out of its a**. That’s a revelation to me!! What have you been feeding your dog? Chillis, curry sauce, hot paprika? So that’s my answer to this peculiar mystery, I need saving from doggie poops that combust by themselves!  Who needs fire lighters for BBQ’s, oops that’s getting a bit too much. Moving swiftly on. Let’s get serious now, be good citizens, don’t let your dog off its lead just in case it tries to sneak through a stone wall.

Back to the parking issue, and to my friends Tintin and Snowy my final photo’s caption is NO PARKING GOODS ENTRANCE. What? There is nowhere here to park your car, yacht, or dinghy either, just in case you’re wondering. There is just a solid brick wall, this does not count as an entrance for your goods. They’d have to be invisible goods to get in there. Ah magic and wizardry, perhaps this is a stone wall to nowhere. I’m so curious – what is behind those bars on that window? I hope there isn’t a prisoner in there …… Really there’s no way in, and no way out either. I’m not kidding, it’s kind of getting a bit Dr. Who ish…. Snowy would be relieved to know that even a little spider couldn’t get through those crevices, believe me, let alone you and your trusty dog on its lead. Maybe there is scotch whisky in there, now that would get Snowy on the trail, he like a little tipple. If Dr. Who is busy with his tardis lets get Tintin, and Snowy on the trail, this sounds like an adventure for a man and his dog.  I loved those books as a kid, The Adventures of Tintin, the comics series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé.  I must re-read! We could call this Tintin adventure The Stone Wall To Nowhere, or just simply The Stone Wall, that sounds very Tintinesque.

Anyway, getting back to reality, (a bit,) I suppose you could smash a window and get in that way, but your dog and Snowy might not approve, he or she might think it is a very bad idea. Let’s face it he or she just wants to go to the park. To do a you know what…. Sensible dog… Fire extinguisher at the ready. Call the fire brigade!!!

Hope you enjoyed my wacky contribution to Camera Lucida, I enjoyed writing this so much!

It’s a bit of daftness to keep you entertained at the start of the week. Happy Humorous Monday, Folks….

Oh if you fancy writing a piece of flash fiction, or a short story about this theme do have a go, I think it would make for fun reading…… I might write one too….

Bye for now.  I’ve got to get my shades on and play poker with my imaginary dog, see you later!

#Monday Blogs: Camera Lucida Photo Challenge: Week 8 Divergent

2015-07-05-0_fotor1

I’m having a shot at taking part in Julia’s Camera Lucida photo challenge this Monday.

Do check out Julia’s blog it is wonderfully dressed in a most brilliant, sumptuous Red!

Here’s the link to My Red Page if you’d like to join in Julia’s Weekly Photography Gallery:

https://myredpage.wordpress.com/2015/08/27/camera-lucida-divergent/

Julia’s chosen theme this week is : Divergent

The definition of divergent is things that move in different directions or that are far apart from each other.

Opposites, dissimilar, different, contradictory, reverse.

I decided to focus on shadows as the theme of light and shadow, and in particular good and bad characters, is one I like to consider in some of my writing. The photo below is one of my Country park photos that I took in the woods, I’ve cropped the image to make it seem more scary looking! I’m particularly pleased with this creepy shadow, what do you think?

wp_20150415_019

The photo below is a striking shadow on the mottled ground, I’ve manipulated the image to make the shadows appear darker, thicker and more menacing. Creepy huh?

untitled

This is a gentler image of my shadow set against contrasting brightly coloured hexagonal paving stones. What am I up to?  Is it really me? There’s no way of  telling is there? That’s the fascinating thing about shadows they leave so much to the viewer’s imagination.

WP_20141028_006

This is another photograph that I took at the country park, I’ve cropped the image to focus on this interesting pattern of lined shadows that caught my eye.

WP_20150427_022

Thanks for stopping by, what do you think of shadows? Do they fascinate and intrigue you too?

Edinburgh Festival: The Kelpies Sculptures

WP_20150822_008

Aren’t these stunning?

These miniature statues are currently a feature of Edinburgh’s West End for the duration of the Edinburgh International Festival. The real Kelpies are one of the largest standing equine sculptures in the world, standing 30 metres high, and located within “the Helix” park, Falkirk, a 350 hectare park situated between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland. The Kelpies are the creation of sculpter Andy Scott. Next time I’m up in Scotland I will most definitely be visiting the “real” Kelpies in Falkirk.

WP_20150822_15_23_11_Pro

Taking photographs of them at different angles, certainly seemed to breathe life into these miniature Kelpies! Also I played about with the exposure, brightness, etc, on a photo editing site: http://www.picmonkey.com/ to get differing effects.

Photography: The Cutty Sark London

WP_20150606_005

I just found this in my draft folder, seem to have forgotten to post this, the powers of my memory are obviously declining. So here goes…..

I took this photograph of the Cutty Sark the evening we picked up my eldest daughter and all her possessions from her University at the end of term, she needed to vacate her flat.

Her first year gone already, how did that happen? Eek, time is flying past too fast. Slow down, dearest, I can’t keep up with you. Anyway getting back to her vacating the flat when I say all her possessions I mean all her possessions! All apart from her crutches no we left those behind, (she broke her ankle this term, poor girl,) hope those crutches don’t come in handy to the next person renting her room! No more broken ankles me hopes.

Luckily we just had enough room in the car for the rest of us and no more, we couldn’t have squeezed another tiny person in there believe me. Girls and our belongings! I tell you half of our car boot was filled with her university books, well this she could be forgiven for, she is a English Literature student after all! My husband commented that when he went to university all he had was a large rucksack! Nowadays an oversized rucksack would just about do for her books, and you wouldn’t want to carry those on your back and that’s a fact!

We travelled back to London from Brighton and had a fantastic night out in Greenwich, and stayed overnight at my sister in law’s house. It was a truly memorable night, we had a lovely meal and ended up in a pub singing along to a band.

There must have been some kind of event on at The Greenwich Observatory as there were several classic cars on display as you can see, very posh!

WP_20150606_006

Here’s a couple of photos of this fantastic evening view, I couldn’t quite do it justice, I need a better camera, I just took these on my mobile phone. But still, I think it gives you an indication of what a beautiful night it was.

WP_20150606_007

WP_20150606_009

On the way to the pub a young man ran by us and threw lots of pound coins on the ground! I don’t know if he was drunk, or just wanting to share his money with passing strangers! A kind contribution for next year’s rent for my daughter? Perhaps!  Given how much her annual rent costs all donations even pound coins gratefully received!

Oh, I do attract these kind of uncanny happenings, I wonder what it is about me?

Mustn’t complain it does give me lots of ideas for stories!

Such a funny and memorable night, I’ve been intending to share this with you for ages. It’s taken me a while to get around to it.

I hope you enjoyed my photos, all comments gratefully received in lieu of pound coins! Next year’s rent is looming…….

Edinburgh Festival: Photographs of My Art Gallery Visit

WP_20150822_003

A fantastic motto to live your life by, Martin Creed’s message: Everything Is Going To Be Alright. Keep positive folks…. Yes, Everything is alright, my mum is doing really well after her operation, I’m so pleased, and relieved. She’s such a strong lady, I’m in awe of her really I am. My brother mentioned that he thought he’d have to wheel her out of the hospital after her operation but no my mum was up on her feet telling the nurses she wanted to go home! Amazing!

WP_20150822_006

I thought I’d share with you this visit to the Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art. It was one of the highlights of my trip to Edinburgh as I got a chance to go out with my mum, just the two of us, which was a treat in itself. She is still a bit delicate after her operation, no dancing for a while yet, so we had a coffee and a chat in the café and afterwards I did a super fast tour, while she read a book and had a well deserved rest.

I always like to pop into these two art galleries when I’m in Edinburgh. This time I just managed to go to Gallery One, but that’s alright as Gallery One is my favourite, it’s always full of inspiring art, has a lovely shop, and a coffee shop too. It is well worth a visit if you are ever in Edinburgh. Currently there is an exhibition of Roy Lichtenstein’s work at Gallery One, as part of Reflections, which is on until 10th January 2016 so still plenty time to see this free exhibition. The gallery is located at 75 Belford Road, Edinburgh, EH4 3DR, and is easily accessible via bus.

WP_20150822_001

These images caught my eye as I went up the stairs, I liked the idea of looking through the window panes and seeing the view divided into six panes of awesomeness! So I nipped down to the café and told my mum that I wanted to take some photos, and then I popped up the stairs to snap these two images. Yes, I was running around that gallery like a sprinter. We were on a tight time frame, it really was a flying visit, as I was going out later in the day to the …….. yes you guessed it, the Book Festival.

WP_20150822_002

Here’s another  view of the same spot from the outside, with a Miró sculpture in the foreground.

WP_20150822_004

Oh and on the way out…. I came face to face with the Sunken Statue, on the way to….. the bus stop!

WP_20150822_005

Kind of sinister isn’t it? This is what happens to you if you spend too much time in art galleries you sink into the concrete of life and partially disappear! That unsuspecting lady and her child making their way out of the gallery better watch out, they’re heading for a Doctor Who moment if you ask me, they’re following the straight line to oblivion! Poor unsuspecting fools. Yes, the sunken statue doesn’t look too happy does he? Can’t blame him, whatever has happened to his nipples? They look hammered in. Must be the shock, poor chap!!

5 Photos – 5 Days Challenge Day 5 – Serena’s Bubble Monster

lens-582605_640

I am currently taking part in the 5 Photos – 5 days challenge after being nominated by Annika Perry from

https://annikaperry.wordpress.com/

Here is my photo and writing for Day 5.

WP_20150320_004

I’ve had this photo in my mobile phone for ages. Why did I photograph my foamy bubble bath ? I was astonished at how big this foamy bubble bath had become, and as you can see it had quite a distinct shape. I’m glad I did because it became quite a stimulus for this little story below.

I’m ending the five day challenge on a light-hearted note, here’s my cheeky story of Serena’s Bubble Monster!!!

Serena’s Bubble Monster

Serena turned the tap on full blast. The candles flickered creating a relaxing ambience. Serena poured herself a large glass of wine, and gulped it down in one big glug. Then she poured another. Continuing in the same vein she tipped the whole bottle of her favourite scented apple bubble bath in. No half measures. Not tonight. The bubbles grew and grew until they resembled a very large foamy marshmallow, the aroma reminding her of the imagined scent of a delightful apple orchard.

Serena was very hungry and would have been tempted to eat this apple marshmallow feast if she wasn’t certain that it was made out of soap. The white bubbly marshmallow spread out in a most peculiar way, whipping around like an enormous candy floss generator growing bigger and bigger. Boy her low blood sugar level was getting to her! Serena tried to turn the tap off but it seemed to be stuck. The water just kept on coming, gushing out faster and faster. Serena dashed around the bathroom, desperately looking for something to grip the tap with. In the process the towel that she had secured around her body nearly fell off. She found a hand towel and tried turning the tap off again. Still no luck. If the water wouldn’t stop it would start to flood the house, and this foaming marshmallow bubble would keep on growing and growing.

WP_20150320_002

Serena sensed this was beyond the scope of her normal realm of experience. She couldn’t google this. In desperation she shouted for her husband but he didn’t come. He must have fallen asleep in front of the TV,  been listening to loud music, or gone to the pub without telling her. That sounded more likely. Ugh. Men!

She shouted again, and this time, she got a reply, a response she wasn’t expecting.

‘Stop shouting can’t you see I’ve got an important job on. You’re agitating me, and agitated bubbles make for an agitated fellow, and I’m sure you wouldn’t want that!’

The bubbles could talk? How peculiar!  They sounded like a gush of water you might hear at the end of a very long ride at your favourite water park.

This fountain of exploding bubbles waved his soapy arms about in distress, sending little clouds of foam tumbling in all directions.

Serena gasped. The bubbles were frothing and foaming and getting more distinct by the minute. The bubble creature was now the size of a little man, who appeared to be frowning.

“Oh, stop it! Will you stop it! Just for a minute, please, Mr what can I call you?” shouted Serena.

“I’m forgetting my manners, do accept my apologies, my dear, I’m …… Mr. Fuming Bubble Monster,” he replied with a soapy frown.

This was the last straw, Serena found herself on the verge of tears. It had been a particularly stressful week, she had run up a huge phone bill, been involved in a minor accident, and had a row with her husband.

“Stop creeping me out, Mr Fuming whatever you are,” she cried.

“Creeping you out, heavens to soap suds, I’m just teasing! Come now, can’t you take a joke? How could a Bubble Monster be creeping you out? I’m just made out of hot steamy water, and friendly bubbles!”

Serena saw her mistake, really it had been an overly stressful week. “Now that I look at you more closely I don’t think you look frightening, but I’m not sure what you are. You’re flicking bubbles everywhere, and if you keep this up you’ll flood my house.”

“I don’t flood houses, well not often, only when I’m very cross. Today I’m in a good mood. I loved your apple bubble bath by the way, what a lovely smell, so fresh and inviting. Lovely candles too, just what the doctor ordered, Serena, you have a great taste in bubble bath. I love your name by the way, Serena, very Serene. It’s just about good enough to eat, oh, not you, my dear, your bubble bath. I feel like a new, improved Bubble Monster now. I needed that so much, and lots of hot water, it’s so important, you’ll see, just one second,” the bubble monster  reached over with his foamy hand and turned the tap.

The tap groaned, and shrieked as if it was in terrible pain and then the water stopped.

“How did you manage to do that?” asked Serena, her forehead creasing with confusion.

“Bubble magic. Next time you run a bubble bath, remember my motto: Bubbles are magic, and magic must never ever be wasted.”

“Oh, now I see, you’re cross with me for emptying the whole of the bubble bath in.”

“Of course, I am, well said,” said the bubble monster as he started to slowly dissolve, his foamy body disappearing one bubble at a time down the plug hole.

“Hey, don’t go,” said Serena, dashing forward as if she was about to catch him.

“Sorry I’ve got to rush. Shame really. Tut Tut my soapy radar tells me someone else is up to bubble mischief.”

The Bubble Monster shook his soapy head, sending specks of bubbles everywhere.

The Bubble Monster began to shrink in size. Soon there was nothing left of him but his neck, chin, and his head, all of which were resting right by the plug hole.

‘We’ll meet again, my dear,” replied the Bubble Monster, his words barely audible, as parts of his head  started to disappear.

“When?” asked Serena.

The Bubble Monster had to race to answer, his words speeding up, faster, and faster.  “Soon. I’m sure of it. Buy more bubble bath. Light more candles.  Atmosphere is everything. Don’t use it all, but don’t be stinggggy.  I’ll check. Take care, Serene Serena. Have a nice bath…..     YIKES…….G O O D B Y E EEEEE…………”

He managed one final lop-sided grin, and a mischievous bubbly wink, and then he was gone.

5 Photos – 5 days Challenge Day 4 – The Green Cap Man Meets A Sticky End

lens-582605_640

I am currently taking part in the 5 Photos – 5 days challenge after being nominated by Annika Perry from

https://annikaperry.wordpress.com/

Here is my photo and writing for Day 4.

WP_20150609_015

This photograph seems to have triggered something quite peculiar in me, which is really strange if you consider it is a very nice looking photograph of a sweetshop.

Anyway, apologies to the shop owners – This is no reflection on their shop which I hasten to add is awesome. And to the random stranger  I photographed, no doubt you had a nice day and nothing strange happened to you, and I’m sure you’re not a Grandfather, please forgive me!

Warning: This short piece of writing is a bit creepy, in a tongue and cheek way. I’ve no idea why this ended up like this but anyway, hope I don’t give you nightmares!

The Green Cap Man Meets A Sticky End.

A man in a pastel green cloth cap walks by oblivious to where he’s standing. His name is Archie. Archie is a School Lollipop crossing guy.  He likes to wear bright colours, in his job this is a necessity, but some might say that he will regret wearing what he’s chosen today. That jaunty cap was a bad idea. Archie is about to cross the threshold but he doesn’t know it. The threshold looks innocuous, it’s just a crossing, a long black and white liquorice pole with a yellow bonbon on top. The shop’s exterior windows are hot pink cerise, everything on display is magnified, there are gigantic love hearts, enormous lollipops, massive angry birds, huge chews, and all manner of mouth-watering sumptuous delights.

When Archie takes that step, it happens, he wasn’t to know. Nobody seems to notice. Everybody is way too pre-occupied. It’s Saturday and the shop is flooded with busy. The shop assistants are pricing up items on tills, or replenishing stock, and parents are keeping their children from putting too many sweets in their bags, or their mouths! The childrens’ alert eyes pretend that they don’t see Archie’s foolish move, but of course it’s a sugar coated lie, and they do nothing to stop him. To them it’s as if he has always been there. The children think Archie’s rightful place is right here. Grandfather Archie with his pastel green cloth cap holding a huge packet of yummy sweets. He’s encased in the window now, his foot raised slightly as if he’s about to move forward. The movement is a hint of his former ebullient self. He’s a well-placed mannequin, no doubt the display artist would have been proud. Archie can’t take another step, he’s stuck, but at least he’s up there with the other award winning display items. Poor Archie, he’s now blind, deaf and dumb. But it’s no Who concert, no Rock tragedy, he’s not Tommy. This total loss of his senses lasts only a moment. His finely tuned sense of smell returns to him first. He’s surrounded by the most profound aroma of sweetness. Forever. Then it hits him. He can hear children laughing, giggling in their childish way, but don’t let it fool you. The sound is loud, over inflated so many times he’s almost sure that a pumped balloon is about to explode in his head. Archie’s vision begins to return. His eyes are wide, and startled looking. His vision is impaired as if he’s been looking through a sugar coated lining, now fast becoming a growing telescope of fear. The joke’s on him, his false teeth chatter. Nothing else moves, his lips are still, stuck together with layer upon layer of candy chews. He can’t speak. His throat is stuffed, with blasts of popping candy.
